JUSTICE.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s start with a simple case,\u201d he says. \u201cA trolley is out of control. Five workers are on the track. You\u2019re the driver. You can turn the wheel, sending the trolley onto another track where one worker stands. What do you do?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hands rise quickly.<\/p>\n

Most people say the same thing: turn the trolley<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

One life for five. A hard choice, but the \u201cbest\u201d outcome.<\/p>\n

The professor nods like he expected that. Then he leans forward, almost casually, and says:<\/p>\n

\u201cNow let\u2019s change the situation. You\u2019re not the driver anymore. You\u2019re a bystander on a bridge. The trolley is still heading for five. There\u2019s a large man beside you. If you push him, he\u2019ll fall onto the track and stop the trolley\u2014saving the five, killing him. Would you push him?\u201d<\/p>\n

until the one becomes an innocent person you must intentionally kill<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The professor lets the discomfort sit.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat changed?\u201d he asks.<\/p>\n

A student finally says what everyone is thinking:<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the transplant case, you\u2019re using a person like a tool.\u201d<\/p>\n

Exactly.<\/p>\n
