A trolley is racing toward five<\/strong> workers. You can pull a lever and divert it onto another track where one<\/strong> worker will die instead.<\/p>\n

Most hands go up fast: pull the lever<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It feels like the moral version of common sense. Five lives saved. One lost. Tragic, but \u201cright.\u201d<\/p>\n

The professor doesn\u2019t argue. He simply smiles\u2014like he\u2019s waiting for the room to step into the next trap.<\/p>\n

\u201cNew version,\u201d he says. \u201cNow you\u2019re not the driver. You\u2019re a bystander on a bridge. The trolley is still heading toward five. Next to you stands a very large man. If you push him off the bridge, he will stop the trolley. Five live. He dies. Do you push?\u201d<\/p>\n
