The lecture begins like a harmless class discussion\u2014until the professor drops a scenario that sounds like pure arithmetic.<\/p>\n

A trolley is speeding toward five workers<\/strong>. You can pull a lever and divert it onto another track where one<\/strong> worker will die instead.<\/p>\n

Most students answer fast: pull the lever<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It feels like the moral version of common sense. Five lives saved. One life lost. Terrible, but \u201cbetter.\u201d
This is where the lecture quietly introduces the first moral engine: consequentialist thinking<\/strong>\u2014judging right and wrong by outcomes.<\/p>\n

Then the professor changes one detail.<\/p>\n

Now you\u2019re not the driver. You\u2019re standing on a bridge. The trolley is still heading for five. Next to you stands a very large man. If you push him off the bridge, his body will stop the trolley. Five live, he dies.<\/p>\n

Same math. Same number of deaths. Same number of lives saved.<\/p>\n

But the room changes instantly.<\/p>\n

People hesitate. Some shake their heads. Some whisper, \u201cThat\u2019s different.\u201d<\/p>\n

And the professor asks the question that exposes the contradiction:<\/p>\n

Because pulling a lever feels like redirecting danger from a distance.

Our moral instincts react not only to outcomes, but to the nature of the act\u2014intent, directness, and whether someone is being treated as a mere means.<\/strong><\/p>\n

PART 2<\/h2>\n

Next, the professor moves the dilemma into medicine, where it starts feeling less like philosophy and more like life-or-death responsibility.<\/p>\n

First, an ER triage case:<\/p>\n

You can save either one<\/strong> severely injured patient or five<\/strong> moderately injured patients.<\/p>\n

Many students still choose: save five<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The consequence-based logic holds.<\/p>\n

Then comes the transplant scenario\u2014the one that almost always detonates the room:<\/p>\n

Five patients need organs or they die. A healthy patient comes in for a routine checkup. If you kill him and harvest his organs, the five live.<\/p>\n

Almost everyone says no<\/strong> immediately.<\/p>\n

Not \u201cmaybe.\u201d Not \u201cit depends.\u201d Just no<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The class suddenly understands that they weren\u2019t just \u201csaving five\u201d in the earlier cases\u2014they were tolerating a death as a side effect.<\/p>\n

Here, the death is the method<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And that triggers the second moral engine: categorical moral reasoning<\/strong>\u2014the belief that some actions (like murdering an innocent) are inherently wrong, even if they produce a better outcome.<\/p>\n

The professor lets the tension settle:<\/p>\n

    If morality is just maximizing good results, the transplant killing should be allowed.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    If people have inviolable rights, it can\u2019t be allowed\u2014no matter how many you save.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    This is why the course matters: it shows how a society can argue endlessly about justice because people are often running different moral software<\/strong> without realizing it.<\/p>\n

    PART 3<\/h2>\n

    Then the professor stops using hypotheticals.<\/p>\n

    He tells a true story: Queen v. Dudley and Stephens<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    After a shipwreck, four sailors drift for days with no food or water. They believe death is near. Two of them kill the cabin boy, Richard Parker<\/strong>, and eat him to survive.<\/p>\n

    Now the trolley problem isn\u2019t a thought experiment.<\/p>\n

    It\u2019s a corpse.
    It\u2019s desperation.
    It\u2019s law.<\/p>\n

    They claim necessity<\/strong>: \u201cWe had to, or we would all die.\u201d<\/p>\n

    And the debate becomes brutal:<\/p>\n

      Consequence-based defenders say: \u201cOne died so others could live.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      Then the class reaches for what humans always reach for when morality gets ugly: procedural fairness<\/strong> and consent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        \u201cWhat if the boy consented?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        But even these \u201csolutions\u201d feel contaminated, because starvation can make consent coercive and lotteries feel like paperwork over violence.<\/p>\n

        That\u2019s the course\u2019s real opening move:<\/p>\n

        It forces you to face the fact that justice is not simply about outcomes or rules\u2014
        it\u2019s about how we weigh human life, dignity, and responsibility when every option is terrible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        And the lecture ends with a warning that stings:<\/p>\n

        You can\u2019t hide behind \u201cskepticism\u201d forever. You\u2019ll still make moral choices in real life\u2014about law, healthcare, punishment, war, equality\u2014whether you want to or not.<\/p>\n

        So the intro lecture doesn\u2019t give a clean answer.<\/p>\n

        It gives a mirror.<\/p>\n

        Most people will pull the lever to save five.
