Ahead, five workers are tied to the rails.<\/p>\n

You are standing by a switch.<\/p>\n

If you do nothing, five die.<\/p>\n

If you pull the lever, the trolley shifts to a side track\u2014where one worker stands.<\/p>\n

You pull the switch.<\/p>\n

One dies. Five live.<\/p>\n

Most people say that is the right choice.<\/p>\n

Why?<\/p>\n

Because five lives are worth more than one.<\/p>\n

This feels intuitive. Mathematical. Efficient.<\/p>\n

Now change one detail.<\/p>\n

You are no longer at a switch.<\/p>\n

You are standing on a bridge above the tracks.<\/p>\n

Beside you is a very large man.<\/p>\n

If you push him off the bridge, his body will stop the trolley.<\/p>\n

He will die.<\/p>\n

Five will live.<\/p>\n

Do you push him?<\/p>\n

Most people hesitate.<\/p>\n

Most say no.<\/p>\n

But why?<\/p>\n

The numbers are identical.<\/p>\n

Five versus one.<\/p>\n

If morality is just arithmetic, the answer should not change.<\/p>\n

Yet it does.<\/p>\n

The first scenario appeals to consequentialism<\/strong>\u2014the idea that the morality of an action depends on its outcomes. If the result is better overall, the action is justified.<\/p>\n

Four sailors stranded at sea.<\/p>\n

One of them, a young cabin boy named Richard Parker, fell ill.<\/p>\n

The captain, Dudley, made a decision.<\/p>\n

He killed the boy.<\/p>\n

The others consumed his body to survive.<\/p>\n

They were rescued four days later.<\/p>\n

Alive.<\/p>\n

Back in England, they were charged with murder.<\/p>\n

Their defense?<\/p>\n

Necessity.<\/p>\n

If they hadn\u2019t killed him, all would have died.<\/p>\n

Four lives saved at the cost of one.<\/p>\n

Is that not like the trolley?<\/p>\n

The courtroom wrestled with it.<\/p>\n

If survival is at stake, does morality bend?<\/p>\n

If killing one preserves many, is it justified?<\/p>\n

Some argued the logic of consequences:<\/p>\n

    Pure categorical reasoning can seem rigid\u2014refusing to consider outcomes even in desperate cases.<\/p>\n

    Philosophy does not give us easy answers.<\/p>\n

    But it sharpens the questions.<\/p>\n

    Why do we recoil at pushing the man but not at pulling the switch?<\/p>\n

    Why does consent matter in some cases but not others?<\/p>\n

    Why is murder treated as categorically wrong\u2014even when consequences tempt us otherwise?<\/p>\n

    Perhaps the discomfort is the point.<\/p>\n
