Worse than recognition. The kind that reaches backward through time and drags something buried up by the throat.<\/p>\n

\u201cClear the floor,\u201d Brooks said.<\/p>\n

Nobody moved.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weights hit rubber mats. Conversations died. Reed looked around with the stubborn confusion of a young man who still thought this was somehow about him. Maybe, in a way, it was. He had kicked open a door I had kept shut for over half a century.<\/p>\n

Brooks pulled out his phone and made a call on speaker.<\/p>\n

\u201cSir,\u201d he said when the line connected, \u201cI need confirmation on a legacy personnel file. Codename Mako. NCDU attachment. Korean theater. Name: Evelyn Hayes Harper.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room was so quiet I could hear the fluorescent lights hum.<\/p>\n

Brooks lowered the phone. \u201cPetty Officer Fallon, do you know what that tattoo means?\u201d<\/p>\n

Reed said nothing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt predates the modern Teams,\u201d Grant said. \u201cNaval Combat Demolition Unit. There were unofficial female assets attached to a classified maritime sabotage program during Korea. They weren\u2019t supposed to exist on paper. Most still don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

A younger operator muttered, \u201cFemale SEALs in Korea? Come on.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at him. \u201cNot SEALs,\u201d I said quietly. \u201cNot then.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words pulled every eye in the room back to me.<\/p>\n
