Miller spun back. \u201cI said stay away from my vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n
I stopped with my hand inches from the fender. \u201cOfficer, your pride is not worth that child\u2019s breath.\u201d<\/p>\n
His face reddened. \u201cYou want to get detained tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n
Before I could answer, another cruiser whipped off Route 33 and skidded into the lot. Sergeant Dana Price got out before the engine even settled.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is going on here?\u201d she demanded.<\/p>\n
Miller straightened. \u201cVehicle malfunction, Sergeant. Civilian interference.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miller looked like he\u2019d swallowed gravel.<\/p>\n
Price called EMS again through her working radio, then turned to me. \u201cCan you get this unit running?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI can try,\u201d I said. \u201cBut I need him out of my way.\u201d<\/p>\n
Miller bristled. \u201cSergeant\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMove.\u201d<\/p>\n
He moved, but only half a step.<\/p>\n
I leaned over the engine. The smell hit me first: warm plastic, faint electrical burn, and something sharper beneath it. Not normal wear. Not a simple no-start. I listened as Price told Miller to try the key one more time.<\/p>\n
