Part of me thinks the promise is complete. Daniel is named. Ellen knows. His mother, wherever she is, no longer has to sit beneath a lie. Another part of me—the younger Marine still inside the old bones—knows sealed pages rarely stay sealed for innocent reasons.

So I keep Daniel’s photo in my workshop now, beside the window where the morning light hits first.
