Margaret Ellison lived in the kind of house that made silence feel expensive. The front hall had marble floors, fresh lilies, and a staircase so polished it reflected light. Mercer later told me he knew before he sat down that the necklace story was wrong—not from evidence at first, but from the way Mrs. Ellison said my mother’s name. My mother accepted only after weeks of thinking, and only after Margaret agreed to one condition: respect would no longer depend on apology after harm. It would be built into the work itself.

Officer Mercer visited us one last time before the case closed.
